Seasonal Reflections: Shopping Small and Scottish

As the third week of December is now upon us, it’s wonderful to embrace this magical time by getting involved in celebrations with family and friends. However, sometimes the magic can be lost in what feels like a sea of stress-filled preparations and gift buying. As a team we have realised that we can learn a lot from this busy Christmas period to help the search for the perfect presents for loved ones at any time of the year.

Small and local businesses have been hit tremendously hard over the last couple of years and so there’s never been a better time to start shopping with them. This benefits us in that often, we receive a much more personal service with greater thought and love going into what we are gifting, whilst also greatly benefiting the person running the business as every single purchase can make a difference to their livelihood, as well as the local community and economy.

With buying locally sourced and sustainable gifts in mind, we have curated an edit of some wonderful young Scottish suppliers to support throughout 2022 for birthdays, weddings, ‘thank-yous’ or quite simply ‘just because’…

Scribe & Grow – Based on the Isle of Skye, this shop sells eco-friendly greeting cards which can be planted after use to grow seasonal flowers! Zero-waste candles are also on offer, as well as cute stationary to brighten up the workspace.

Northern Lights Cakery – For the sweet tooth in your life, this business sells beautiful bespoke celebration cakes for those living in the area local to Colintraive. Postal gift boxes filled with mouth watering variations of brownies, sugar cookies, cakesicles and more are also available for delivery UK-wide!

North Uist Distillery Co – This family run distillery in the Outer Hebrides can meet all your festive Gin needs with its multi award-winning Downpour range – the mini gift sets on offer are a perfect stocking filler.

Riverbeds Luxury Wee Lodges – Why not treat yourself and a loved one to a stay in your very own magical miniature hotel with a private jacuzzi, nestled into the forest of Glencoe? There is a selection of vouchers available for accommodation, as well as a range of outdoor experiences.

Reina Edmiston Art – Reina produces stunning oil and acrylic artwork featuring the Scottish Highlands and Islands, and has even begun repurposing single-use plastics into her some of her newer pieces.

Lost Sheep Guiding – If you are struggling to think of something for an adventurer, look no further than the various winter, summer and bespoke packages for guided walks and hikes that these mountaineers are offering across the Scottish Highlands. Gift vouchers are available to accommodate an array of price points.

Younger Day Spa – Spoil someone for choice with a trip to this Lossiemouth-based business, which offers a selection of salon and spa treatments to be enjoyed in peaceful solitude or in the company of a loved one.

Small businesses form the backbone of our economy and supporting them helps local communities thrive. So, if you can, support a local business during 2022 – perhaps make it one of your resolutions? Also, it is incredibly helpful to leave lovely reviews, tell your friends about them, and share them on social media. Every little helps.
